Choosing Your First Crystal

A selection of crystals from my personal collection

So you’ve decided you want to start working with crystals, but now you’re looking at them thinking, where do I even start?”

This is the bit that puts a lot of people off, but it really doesn’t need to be complicated.

Choosing your first crystal isn’t about getting it “right”. It’s not about rules or picking the “most powerful” one. It’s much simpler than that.

Start with what you’re drawn to.

That might be:

a colour, or shape you like, or just one you keep noticing for no obvious reason, that’s enough.

A lot of people overthink this stage, but your instinct is usually the best place to begin.

If you want a bit more structure, you can also think about what you’d like support in your daily life.

Crystals have been traditionally linked to different types of energy, so you can use that as a guide if it helps.

For example:

Amethyst is traditionally linked to helping you relax & sleep better, Clear Quartz is traditionally linked to getting rid of negative energy & can be used in place of any other crystal, Rose Quartz is traditionally linked to emotional balance & self-love

Black Tourmaline is traditionally linked to protection & grounding energy.

You don’t need to memorise anything, you don’t need a full plan.

Choose the crystal that feels right to you right now & if you change your mind later or feel drawn to something else, that’s completely normal too, most people don’t stop at one crystal anyway.

Once you’ve got your first crystal, keep it simple.

Hold it, carry it with you, or keep it somewhere you’ll see it during the day.

You’re not doing anything wrong. There’s no complicated process you need to follow.

It’s just about starting.

Don’t overthink it.

If a crystal catches your attention, start there.

That’s how most people begin anyway.
